Costa Rica Fishing Questions

Where are you located?

We operate from the Central Pacific of Costa Rica, in Quepos/Manuel Antonio. But we also recommend and book other boats all throughout the Pacific Coast, such as Guanacaste, Los Suenos and Golfito.

What type of boats do you have? What size are they?

We own two boats: A 34ft Sea Lady is our custom crusader, and our 34ft Wild Lady is a custom ocean master with center console and walk around.

Do you have air conditioning? Are they open boats?

Our JP Sportfishing boats are open boats, allowing for the wind to easily run through. Unfortunately, this also means we do not have AC. However, we can reserve you a boat with AC–yes.

Are your boats single engine or twin screws? How fast do they run?

JP Sportfishing boats are both single engine, which run from 16 knots to 20 knots.

How long does it take to get to fishing grounds?

Usually it takes about 1 hour to 2 hours depending on where the fish are.

What is the difference in a half day, a three-quarters day, and full day?

Full days go from 7:30am to 4:30pm, and include lunch.

Three-quarter days go from 7:30am to 2:30pm and include lunch.

Half days go from 7:30am to 12:30pm, and do not include lunch. (We recommend this only for inshore fishing).

Can we do inshore fishing, bottom fishing and offshore fishing on the same day?

We can definitely do all type of fishing, however, we definitely recommend focusing on one particular type per day in order to get the best results.

Are we guaranteed to catch fish? How many fish are we going to catch?

Our Captains will do their very best to put you on fish and catch as many as possible. How many you catch will depend on season and location; given we’re operating in a natural habitat there are no guarantees, but JP Sportfishing is known for having one of the finest Captains in the area–with our company for over ten years and counting.

What does a charter include?

All charters include beer, water, soda, snacks, fruit, tackle, and a top-notch captain and mate on board.

What is not included?

Transfers from hotel to boat to hotel, fishing licenses, or boat crew gratuities.

Are you catch and release? What/how many fish can we keep?

Like all companies in the area, due to Costa Rican law we work as catch and release with Billfish, (meaning Sailfish and Marlin). All other types are eligible to catch and keep as many as 5 fish, including Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Snook, Wahoo, Grouper, Snapper, etc.

What is your refund policy?

For Packages: Cancellations made 59 to 32 days prior to arrival will be refunded 80% of the package cost; no refunds will be issued for cancellations received 31 days or less.

For Boat Charters: Cancellations made 59 to 32 days prior to charter date will be refunded 80% of the charter cost; no refunds will given for cancellations made in less than 31 days or “no shows.”

What is for lunch?

Fresh-made ham and cheese sandwiches, though we sometimes like to surprise our clients. Wink.

Do you do split/share charters?

Sure! That said, it can be challenging to find others that want to fish the same day as you do, given that many of our clients are already in private family and friends charters. Therefore, we recommend keeping your eyes peeled for split/share charter possibilities at your respective hotel, restaurant, bar, pool, etc.

Can I bring my own rod/tackle?

Yes, you may. (Aren’t we sweet?)

Fly fishing equipment?

We do not have fly fishing equipment on board, however, you are welcome to bring it! The JP Sportfishing crew is highly knowledgeable with regards to fly fishing techniques.

What is the tipping custom?

From 15%-20% of the daily rate charter. We promise our crew will work for every cent of it.
